My first column for this new calendar year 2014 provides me an opportunity to greet you with the traditional greetings of Happy New Year and to assure you of a remembrance in my daily prayers that God’s blessings be with you and yours in the New Year.
The month of January is a time for new beginnings. The time ahead is unchartered, unknown, unforeseen. What it may hold is hidden from us and for this I say, Thanks Be To God. It would be too much to bear if we knew not only the sufferings and difficulties that lie ahead but even the joys and delights that we will experience.
We know that troubles and happinesses happen to each of us. However, through the Sacrament of Baptism we are bound to God, joined to God with us, who is Christ the Lord. That binding and joining make a difference for what is ahead for us in the new year 2014.
As the great Doctor of the Church, Saint Teresa of Jesus, wrote, God alone is enough as everything passes. Time is not without significance for us believers. Yes, as Saint Teresa reminds us, time passes but God is at hand as it unravels.
At the Paschal Vigil on the night before Easter Sunday, the church proclaims, all time belongs to you Oh God. You are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. 2014 is God’s time.
In the expanse of the time of 2014 that awaits us I pray that the blessings of God who is now, was, and will always be, may be known and experienced by you in the time ahead.
