Carpenter Society to spearhead East Camden development plan

The Wells Fargo Regional Foundation announced Dec. 8 an investment of $750,000 into the continued revitalization of East Camden. Over the next five years, St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society will spearhead this investment with four neighborhood partners: Cooper’s Ferry Partnership, Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey, UrbanPromise, and YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties.

The grant was announced in the job training center at the Hispanic Family Center, supported by this endeavor.

During the last two years, over 700 residents of East Camden participated indeveloping, My East Camden, a five-year plan for the revitalization of the area.

St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society will spearhead this initiative which includes improving neighborhood conditions, fostering commercial revitalization and economic development, improving housing, and enhancing culture, arts, open space and the public realm.

“St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society has been a strong leader in the revitalization of East Camden,” said Denise McGregor Armbrister, executive director of the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation. “We are honored to partner with them, the residents and key partners in this neighborhood to bring lasting change to the community.”

“With nearly 30 years of work in the community, the Carpenter Society will work with great partners to continue the revitalization of East Camden,” said Pilar Hogan Closkey, executive director of SJCS. “We have all been actively working on separate endeavors; this initiative allows us to come together and intentionally work together to leverage additional outcomes and address all residents and stakeholders within the community,”

St. Joseph’s Carpenter Society is a neighborhood based community development nonprofit organization with its office in East Camden. It works to revitalize neighborhoods through housing development, resident education, and community stabilization efforts. Since 1985, SJCS has created over 950 homes for families.
