Father Lewis Battisti, longtime educator in Absecon, dies

Father Lewis Battisti

Father Lewis Battisti, 89, longtime pastor and educator in the Diocese of Camden, died May 11.

He had been retired since 2006.

Born on May 19,1936 in Hazelton, Pa., Father Battisti studied for the priesthood at Christ the King Seminary in Aurora, N.Y.

He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Camden on April 14, 1962, by Bishop Celestine J. Damiano.

He spent three decades at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon as a member of the faculty (1963-1981); vice principal (1973-1981); and principal (1981-1993).

From 1993 until his retirement in 2006, he was pastor of Blessed Sacrament in Margate (now part of Holy Trinity Parish).

A visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on May 19 at Holy Trinity Parish, Blessed Sacrament Church, 11 Kenyon Ave., Margate. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. 

Burial will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.
