Sister Josephine Calo, MPF, 84, died peacefully March 10 at Saint Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, .NJ.
She taught at Saint Peter School, Merchantville, 1966-67 and again from 1970-72, and at a number of other Catholic schools in New Jersey.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 13 in the Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh. Interment followed at the Ave Maria Cemetery.
Born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut, Sister Josephine entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in February 1953 and was invested in August of the same year. Her final religious profession was in 1956.
Sister Josephine was awarded a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Saint Joseph University, Philadelphia. Later she was certified as a hospital chaplain.
In addition to teaching, Sister Josephine held other roles: principal and superior, hospital chaplain; pastoral minister. In 2012, Sister Josephine became a resident at Saint Joseph Hall Infirmary.
“In every place of mission and in every role, Sister Josephine was loved by both children and adults; she was gentle, kind, compassionate. Her greatest strength was ministering to the sick because of these distinct qualities,” her community said when announcing her death.
Sister Josephine is survived by nieces and nephews.
