Father Robert Gregorio’s excellent defense of labor unions (March 25, 2011) failed to include one of the most important benefits of unionization, i.e. that unionized workers can only be discharged or disciplined for “just cause.” In collective bargaining agreements, such provisions protect workers from arbitrary and capricious treatment by employers and can be enforced in the grievance/arbitration procedure. Non-union workers do not enjoy this protection and can be discharged for any reason that does not violate the law. In my experience, this protection is a major reason for workers wanting to be unionized.
