Msgr. Bernard Patrick Hewitt, 85, died Friday, Nov. 6.
Born on Jan. 23, 1923, Msgr. Hewitt attended St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore before being ordained by Bishop Bartholomew J. Eustace on May 31, 1947. His first assignment was as summer parochial vicar at Sacred Heart, Camden.
Msgr. Hewitt served as pastor at four parishes: Epiphany, Longport (1959-63); St. Vincent Pallotti, Haddon Township (1963-69); Holy Saviour, Westmont (1969-75); and Blessed Sacrament, Margate (1975-93).
During his 60-plus years as a priest, Msgr. Hewitt was chaplain of St. Mary’s Home, Cherry Hill, director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and director of vocations. He was also a member of the Priests’ Council, Marian Commission, and worked with the Diocesan Office of the Tribunal.
He retired in 1993.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, Margate on Thursday, Nov. 12. Burial took place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
