William and Muriel Elliott, left, congratulate Kyle Lafferty, a junior at St. Joseph High School, on winning NBC40’s Hero Campaign Essay contest. Kyle’s inspiration for his essay was his mother who, when she was 6 years old, was hit by a drunk driver and spent three months in the hospital. The Hero Campaign for Designated Drivers was started by Elliott who lost his son, Ensign John R. Elliott, on Route 40 from a drunk driver. A $500 donation was made in Kyle’s name to St. Joseph High School and Kyle received a limo to the prom. Also pictured are Kyle’s parents, Stephanie and James Lafferty; Lynn Domenico, principal of St. Joseph High School, and Father Charles Conaty, school president.
