Five Gloucester Catholic baseball players were chosen by ESPN-HS for New Jersey All-State Baseball honors in the publication’s recent NJ issue earlier this month.

ESPN-HS is the sports media outlet’s website for high school sports.

The preseason honorees are:

Top Position Players — Joe Brooks, second base, catcher, senior; and John Brue, Gloucester Catholic, first base, senior

Pitchers — Mike Shawaryn, right-handed pitcher, junior

Other Top Players — Elliott McCummings, catcher, outfield, senior; and Brett Tenuto, third base, senior

Gloucester Catholic High School was the recipient of the Adam Taliaferro Foundation’s Coaches Award during the ATF Awards Recognition Dinner on Thursday, March 15, at The Coastline Restaurant in Cherry Hill.

Adam Taliaferro, originally from Voorhees, is a former American football player who gained wide recognition for his recovery from a spinal cord injury sustained while playing cornerback for Penn State.

Tom Iacovone, Jr., has headed GCHS’s participation in the foundation’s annual Player of the Year Contest since 2007.

GCHS raised close to $4,000 in this past fall’s ATF Player of the Year Contest, with funds going toward scholarships and programs to help individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Presenting board member Tom Curley thanked Iacovone and Gloucester Catholic for consistently finishing as one of the top schools in fund raising each year for the Taliaferro Foundation.
