Katarina Dedes, a fifth grader at Resurrection Catholic School in Cherry Hill, is currently working on an independent project as part of the Green Challenge Program sponsored by the EIRC (Educational Information and Resource Center). Last year, as a participant in Resurrection Catholic’s Gifted and Talented Program, Katarina worked with three other students on a project called “Let The Sun Shine In,” which included shutting off the lights in the school for an entire day, which saved 33 percent of the school’s energy cost for the day.
St. Rose of Lima School, Haddon Heights, was recently chosen to be a part of the Scholastic BookTalkers Program. Several of the students were given books to read and asked to develop a short booktalk to be used by Scholastic Books at their upcoming Book Fair promotions. The St. Rose of Lima School librarian, Peggy Crowell and the library staff helped the students choose their books and guided them in their presentations. Their presentations were videotaped and used at the recent book fair held at St. Rose and they will also be used at other schools.
Members of Team Mercy, Bishop McHugh Regional School’s ministry club, organized a Lenten outreach to benefit Holy Redeemer Food Pantry. Students from grades PreK – 8 had a competition to see which class could collect the most canned/non-perishable goods. The third grade class won the contest collecting 419 cans, averaging approximately 23 cans per child. The school has collected over 1,783 cans and non-perishable goods for the food pantry during this outreach alone. In a combined outreach, the CCD students from St. Joseph’s Parish and members of Team Mercy assembled and donated 26 Easter baskets to the pantry.
Last month the John Paul II Regional School Service Club donated over 100 coats to Catholic Charities. Coordinated by teachers Kathy Considine and Cathy McBride, the service collected new and barely used winter coats.
The Knights of Columbus, Pope John XXIII Council 6621 recently held an essay contest for area students entitled, “Freedom of Religion.” All eighth grade students at St. Mary School, Vineland, participated and three winners were selected to receive a $25 gift card and certificate: Haley Fralick, Caroline Kruger and Chase Bisignaro
