Sister Joanne Tarpey, RSM, formerly Sister Mary Lorin, who taught in Collingswood and Ocean City, died July 2.
Born in Plainfield, N.J., she attended high school at Mount Saint Mary Academy run by the Sisters of Mercy. Upon graduation, she entered the Mercy community.
For almost 30 years, she educated grade school students in the Diocese of Camden, first as Saint John School in Collingswood (1969-84), and then at Saint Augustine School, Ocean City (1984-97).
“Her love of history and desire to share that love with her students was evident in the many ways she engaged and challenged her students to understand and appreciate government and political systems,” the Mercy community said in a statement announcing her passing.
She is survived by her Mercy family; friends; and her cousins and their families: Vincent and Helen Bohn, Cheryl O’Neill, Elaine Schnitter, Mary Ann O’Connor and Suzie Whiting.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 7 at Immaculate Conception Chapel at Mount Saint Mary, Watchung, N.J. Burial arrangements were private.
