Sister Mary Lawrence Scanlan dies

Sister Mary Lawrence Scanlan, OSF, a teacher and minister in the Diocese of Camden for almost 20 years, died Nov. 24 at the age of 92.

On Aug. 15, 1941, she was received into the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, and made final profession on Aug. 16, 1948. In the Camden Diocese, she taught at St. Mary of the Angels Academy in Haddonfield, 1945-49, 1950-58 and 1977-79.

From 1974-77, she served in the Family Life Bureau of the Camden Diocese.

In addition to her work in New Jersey, in Pennsylvania, New York, and the West Indies, she served as an educator, publications advisor, vocation director, pastoral care worker, and guidance counselor.

“Sister Mary Lawrence’s life in ministry was diverse and focused on the most vulnerable of God’s people,” her congregation remembered.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Backus, and nieces, nephews, as well as great- and great-grand nieces and nephews, of which there are 82.

A Funeral Mass took place on Dec. 1 in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial followed in Saint Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
