Sister Mary Pagano, former teacher in Hammonton, dies

Sister Mary Pagano, MPF, 95, former teacher at St. Joseph School in Hammonton, died Dec 5 at St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J.

Born and raised in Newark, N.J., Sister Mary entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1934, received her habit in 1935, and made her religious profession in 1938.

Predominantly a junior high School teacher, Sister Mary taught sixth grade at St. Joseph from 1966-68, and in the St. Joseph learning center from 1983-92.

She also taught at other Catholic schools in New Jersey, Maryland and New York. From 1956-64, Sister Mary was the principal and Superior at St. Mary of Mt. Virgin, New Brunswick.

Sister Mary retired at Villa Walsh in 2001 and became a resident at St. Joseph Hall Infirmary in 2009.

“No matter what assignment given to Sister Mary, it was accomplished zealously and always very thorough in her approach. Excellence and perfection were her ultimate goals,” her community remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Dec. 9 at the St. Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J., followed by interment at Ave Maria Cemetery.

Sister Mary is survived by her sister Nina Cuozzo and her husband Vincent Cuozzo of Carteret; nephews John Cuozzo and his wife Sharon, Vincent Junior and his wife Debbie, nieces Jodi DaSilva and husband Joseph, Karen Rodriguez and her husband Gill, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
