Sister Mary Raymond (Sister Patricia) Alkazin, 94, former chemistry teacher at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, died Aug. 18.
She was born in Atlantic City on March 27, 1922, to the late William Alkazin and Mary Jameson.
A Sister of Mercy since 1941, Sister Raymond spent most of those years as a chemistry teacher in Catholic schools in New Jersey and Massachusetts. From 1975-80, she taught at Absecon’s Holy Spirit.
“Sister Raymond is fondly remembered as a person with a gentle and welcoming spirit and as a humble, prayerful religious sister who, throughout her life, cared deeply for people and reached out to help those in need,” her community said in announcing her death.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Mary Wyatt, Rita Peters and Barbara Alkazin, and brother William Alkazin, Jr.
Sister Mary Raymond’s surviving siblings are Theresa LaRocca (Frank) of Atlantic City; Sue Egony of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law Bette Alkazin of Cedar Brook; and numerous nieces and nephews and many sisters in the Mid-Atlantic community.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 23 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung. Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
