Sister Rita Tassinari dies, taught in Merchantville

Sister Rita Tassinari, MPF, former teacher at St. Peter School in Merchantville, died Sept. 25, at the age of 70.

Born in Somerville, Mass., she entered the Religious Teachers Filippini on July 14, 1951. She received the religious habit on Aug. 31, 1958, and made her religious profession on Aug. 27, 1961.

Sister Rita began her teaching ministry in 1957 at Holy Rosary in Jersey City. She also taught and served as principal at other numerous schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

From 1999-2001, she taught sixth grade at St. Peter Elementary School in Merchantville.

She was the director of junior professed sisters for three years, and she served as the superior of Villa Walsh for eight years.

She is survived by her sisters, Sister Rose Tassinari, MPF, and Anna Kemp; brothers Anthony, Amadeo, Robert, John, and Raphael; aunts Sister Zita Torlai, MPF, Rita Del Iacano; uncle John Torlai; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Theresa Torlai.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 1 in the St. Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sister Rita will be accepted for the St. Joseph Hall Infirmary Building Fund, c/o Sister Betty Jean Takacs, MPF, Provincial Superior, Villa Walsh, 455 Western Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960-4928.
