St. Mary’s Prayer Shawl Ministry

CHERRY HILL — For more than three years the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Mary Parish has been bringing comfort and guidance to those in need.

“We donate shawls to Samaritan Hospice in Marlton,” said Lisa O’Shea, who heads up the ministry, whose full name is the Prayer Shawl Knitting and Crocheting Group.

Members of the ministry meet occasionally to discuss designs to create for the shawls. O’Shea noted that white christening shawls are made for new babies and baby blankets are crocheted for Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

“We present these blankets to those parents who have lost a baby,” O’Shea said. “We also make lap shawls for the people at St. Mary’s Nursing Home.”

The idea of making shawls first started with baby blankets and lap blankets. The members branched out into other areas after needs were discovered.

O’Shea noted that St. Mary is not the only parish that makes prayer shawls. Others make them primarily for parishioners, but she believes St. Mary’s is the only one that donates its shawls.
