Sacred Heart Church in Camden will sponsor a concert next month to celebrate the women of the parish and its South Camden neighborhood in particular, and all women of the Diocese of Camden in general.
The “All Woman Concert (For Women and the Men who Love Them)” will feature local talent, beginning with opera singer Barbara Dever and her daughter Shauna Dever.
Other performers include singers from several other Catholic and Protestant Camden churches: Eileen Coyle of Sacred Heart; the No Windows women’s quartet; Linda Damico of Philadelphia; Demaris Thillet of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden; Linda Sistrunk of Antioch Baptist Church, Camden; and Sovonne Ukam, Karen Dorsey and Chris Lacy of St. Josephine Bakhita Parish, Camden.
The performers picked their selections with women and motherhood in mind. The pieces range from classical to folk music.
Organizers planned the concert for March because it is Women’s History Month and March 8 is the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.
Oblate Brother Michael O’Neill McGrath, an artist whose studio is near the church, donated the use of one of his painting (right) to advertise the concert. The image depicts saints, beginning with Mary and Elizabeth at the top, and women associated with social justice issues.
Grouped at left are Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha; Harriet Tubman, organizer of the Underground Railroad; and St. Hildegard.Grouped at right are Mary Magdalene, St. Therese of Lisieux and social activist Dorothy Day.
Having tea in the foreground are St. Bridget of Ireland, Holocaust victim Anne Frank, St. Joan of Arc and St. Margaret of Scotland.
The concert is to benefit the Thea Bowman House, which is a House of Morning Prayer, the Traveling with the Turtle Course (a 13-week course on women spirituality and peacemaking created by Pace Bene), and local ministries.
