The winner of the 2013 David T. Coghlan Young Catholic Leader Scholarship is Daniel J. O’Shea, an eighth grade student at St. Margaret Regional School in Woodbury Heights.
Daniel will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship for his freshman year at Gloucester Catholic High School.
“The faith that I have developed through my Catholic education will affect all of my interactions for the rest of my life,” he wrote in his winning essay, “I know that I have been given this gift of my Catholic faith and with it I can change the world….”
The runner-up is Haley Finley, an eighth grade student at Gloucester Catholic Junior High School. She will receive a $500 tuition scholarship for her freshman year at Gloucester Catholic Senior High School.
“I hope to continue using my gifts in my Catholic high school and beyond. I look forward to giving back to others within my school, church, community and family,” she wrote in her essay.
The Young Catholic Leader Scholarship is given in memory of Dr. David T. Coghlan, the former superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Camden. It is awarded each year to an eighth grade student who will be attending a diocesan high school.
Dr. Coghlan died in 2005.
