Apologies due

The theme of Father Gregorio’s column of June 26 was apologies due. Apologies seem to be the order of the day, since our president has been doing a great deal of apologizing for the United States on the world stage, even during his most-recent July visit to the G-8 Summit. He also does not protest those who disparage our great country and wish it ill (e.g. Chavez, Ortega, Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong-il). Maybe our president should apologize for apologizing too much.

But while we’re apologizing, can we also not forget to remind our fellow Catholics to apologize for electing a president who will appoint as many as four pro-abortion judges to the Supreme Court? A president who openly admits that when it comes to determining when life begins, that determination is above his pay grade? Can we get our great Catholic university, Notre Dame, to apologize for awarding an honorary doctorate to our national leader, who supports not only stem cell research, abortions, and late-term and partial-birth abortions, but also abortions for those babies who are already born? That’s right; abortions completed after birth by denying care for fully born, live, viable babies intended to be aborted, but who nevertheless survive.

Can we have the bishops apologize?

Only about 50 (Catholic Star Herald, June 26) out of approximately 275 bishops in the U.S. voiced their objections to the awarding of an honorary doctorate to President Obama. For God’s sake (literally) where are the rest of them? How many bishops voted for this pro-abortion president? According to EWTN News Chief Raymond Arroyo, “The bishops I spoke to say that maybe half of their brother bishops, if not more, voted for Obama. Because they thought the symbol of Obama would overcome racism and be a great healer and unity [sic].” How many priests voted for him? Did Father Gregorio? How many “Catholic” parishioners voted for President Obama because of the lack of moral persuasion of bishops and priests?

How can Father Gregorio protest the failures of a past administration, when he does not protest lapses of the current administration? If the leaders of our church cannot see the failure of their ways, I fear we are doomed. Barack Obama, the unapologetic abortionist, would not be president today if it were not for the multitude of Catholics who voted for him, and nothing justifies electing a pro-abortion president. Not even an apology.
