More than a dozen volunteers, including several young people, spent hours using scissors, needles and thread, and sewing machines to make clothes for young girls they will never meet.
The simple dresses they made at Saint Brendan the Navigator Parish’s Quinn Hall in Stone Harbor on Sept. 22 were made not just to clothe poor children but to protect them.
“Besides addressing the basic need for clothing, the dresses that we make provide the girls a level of protection from sex trafficking in some counties,” according to Dress a Girl Around the World, the ministry the parish volunteers devoted their time and efforts to on Make a Difference Day.
“Village pastors and leaders in some villages have told project sponsors that when girls are wearing ragged, torn clothing, those who prey on children assume that the girls have no one to take care of them, so they are an easy target.”
The donated dresses are offered to missions and humanitarian teams throughout the world, and have been distributed in some 75 countries.
