In the past several weeks, parishes and schools throughout the Diocese of Camden have chipped in to support the residents of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Since 2006, parishioners of Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Cape May Court House have supported the country by raising funds to build Cape May County Village, a community in the coastal town of Bord de Mer, Haiti.
Spearheaded by the parish Social Justice Committee, Cape May County residents donated supplies, food and funds for Haitians recently during their time of need.
Also, the second Annual Children’s Art Show and Exhibition is scheduled to take place at Our Lady of the Angels Church on Saturday, March 13, and Sunday, March 14.
At St. Joseph High School, Hammonton, the senior class recently sewed and quilted blankets that have been shipped to Haiti, as part of the Project Linus “10,000 Hugs for Haiti” initiative in senior religion classes.
The school also sponsored “Dimes for Drinking Water,” to raise money to bring clean drinking water to earthquake victims in Haiti. The PUR Purification Kit turns contaminated water into clean drinking water, and one dime will purchase a packet of PUR Purifier of Water, which will provide 10 liters of clean drinking water. In addition to canisters being placed in the school for this effort, the school has reached out to local businesses, to have their own canisters. All of the proceeds will benefit Haiti.
In Newfield, Our Lady of Mercy Academy, along with the Daughters of Mercy at Villa Rossello, held a fundraiser immediately after the Jan. 12 disaster to raise funds for Villa Rossello’s mission in Gonaives, Haiti.
Many other schools raised money for the country’s earthquate victims, including Bishop McHugh Regional School, Cape May Court House ($520 in donations) and John Paul II Regional, Stratford ($800).
The annual Children’s Art Show and Exhibition at Our Lady of the Angels Church, Cape May Court House will take place on Saturday, March 13 from 5:45-6:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 14 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. For additional information, contact Ann Herron at 609-780-2326.
