Real cost of education exceeds tuition

“The Gift of a Lifetime” is more than just a tagline for South Jersey Catholic Schools. Gospel values, academic excellence, a supportive community, and opportunities to serve others are among the many gifts our students experience every day. They are gifts that shape our graduates for life. And they are gifts our students and graduates bring to the communities where they worship, live, work, and serve.

Our schools in South Jersey do everything possible to make the gift of a Catholic school education affordable. Most people do not realize that every family who attends a South Jersey Catholic elementary school receives tuition assistance.

The average tuition charge in our elementary schools is $4,500, but the real cost to educate is an average $8,000 per student. That results in a gap, or discount, of $3,500 per student. Since many families qualify for further discounts, the actual gap is even greater.

There was a time when many parishes funded the full cost of a Catholic school education. This model was not sustainable, so tuition was introduced as a way for families and parishes to share the cost. In some areas of the country there are no parish subsidies. In the Diocese of Camden, parish financial support continues through the Inter-parochial Catholic School Fund (ICSF), a pooled resource that is allocated among the elementary schools each year. ICSF funds cover a portion of the gap; fundraisers and annual fund appeals, gifts and donations, and grants make up the difference. Securing essential funds is a year-round effort for our schools.

There are many ways to support the gift of a Catholic education — even if you don’t have school-aged children or financial means.

  • If you are interested in a Catholic school education for your child, apply. Even if tuition seems out of reach, you may qualify for additional tuition assistance. You will be asked to apply for financial aid when you complete the school application process, so you will know up front if additional support is available.
  • Consider making a contribution to the school of your choice or to the South Jersey Scholarship Fund, which supports elementary and high school students who attend diocesan schools. Visit www.southjerseycatholicschools.org and click “DONATE NOW” to support the scholarship fund.
  • Be a voice for legislation that supports Catholic schools. In 2018, thousands of Catholic school supporters in the Diocese of Camden answered requests to contact state legislators. Their voices (and perhaps yours) were heard, and funding levels were restored for busing, technology, security, and school nurses. Imagine if the nearly 10,000 students in South Jersey Catholic Schools suddenly went to local public schools. At an average $19k cost per pupil to educate, it would cost the state $190 million to accommodate our students.
  • Pray for our schools and our students.

The Gift of a Lifetime is alive and well in South Jersey. On behalf of the Office of Catholic Schools, I thank our administrators, teachers and school staff members, our families and students, our priests, parishioners, donors and vocal supporters, and our great and giving God for the ability to continue our mission: to educate and inspire young minds spiritually, academically and in service to others.

Mary Boyle is superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Camden.
