The Camden Center for Law and Social Justice will celebrate 25 years of serving the needs of the poor and working poor in the City of Camden and Southern New Jersey on Friday, Oct. 17, from 5-8 p.m., at Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield.
The master of ceremonies for the evening will be Billy King, former president and general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team. Rocío Vázquez Álvarez, Acting Consul for Mexico, will provide remarks.
Formally incorporated in 1994, CCLSJ was founded as an act of collaboration between the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), the Diocese of Camden and lay attorneys to provide quality legal services for the immigrant community, victims of domestic violence and the working poor.
Currently, the center has a strong presence in South Jersey, with offices in Camden, Atlantic City (immigration only) and Bridgeton (immigration only), with a staff that includes attorneys, paralegals, support staff, volunteers and interns. The organization is governed by a Board of Trustees.
Recognized by community groups, domestic violence shelters, private attorneys and judges as a leading provider of domestic violence assistance in Camden County and throughout southern New Jersey, in 2005 CCLSJ was chosen by the New Jersey State Bar Association to receive a Special Recognition Pro Bono Award.
Since its inception, the center has assisted more than 19,000 individuals with immigration-related matters, and has provided legal assistance to more than 2,500 victims of domestic violence.
During the Oct. 17 event at Tavistock, the Jane Kenney, Esquire Award will be given to the Honorable Joseph H. Rodriguez, Senior United States District Judge, District Court of New Jersey.
