sisteranneebersold-webELMER — Sister Anne Ebersold, MSC will retire as administrator of Mater Dei Nursing Home here on June 30.

Sister Anne has served for 40 years at Mater Dei. Her retirement also marks the end of the ministry of the Marianites of Holy Cross at Mater Dei. The congregation has served at Mater Dei since 1967.

On June 24, at 4 p.m., Bishop Joseph A. Galante will celebrate Mass in the Mater Dei chapel in honor of the Marianite Congregation and Sister Anne. The chapel will be dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, the patroness of the Marianites of Holy Cross.

A dinner will follow at Masso’s Crystal Manor in Glassboro to honor Sister Anne and her congregation.

Sister Anne was born in Queens, New York, one of eight children of Anna Roberts and Henry Ebersold. Anna was a native New Yorker born on 10th Street and Henry was born in Alsace Lorraine. He emigrated to the United States with his widowed mother and five brothers.

Sister Anne is an alumnus of the Catholic school system of the Brooklyn Diocese. She attended Our Lady of Sorrows Grammar School and Bishop McDonnell High School.

Sister Anne graduated from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart School of Nursing with an RN degree and a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Her nursing experience was acquired at French Hospital of New York City where she first met the Marianites of Holy Cross. She spent five years at French Hospital as nursing supervisor and 10 years as operating room supervisor in Lac Megantic and Mont Laurier in the Province of Quebec, Canada.

In 1970, Sister Anne came to Mater Dei Nursing Home and worked as charge nurse until she became the administrator in 1992.

“During her years at Mater Dei, her kindness and compassion has been shared with residents, their families and the staff,” the nursing home said in a statement announcing her retirement. “She is a strong spiritual presence in the Nursing Home and has comforted all of the elderly and ill who have lived at Mater Dei. Many who have worked with Sr. Anne describe her as tireless, energetic and hard-working.”

In 1996, Sister Anne was honored by the Diocese of Camden with the St. Luke Award “in recognition of many years of bringing Christ’s healing ministry to the people of God in Southern New Jersey.”
