Father Charles Bean, a priest for 48 years, dies

Father Charles Bean, 76, who served in many parishes in the Diocese of Camden and as a chaplain in prisons and hospitals, died Wednesday, July 21.

During his years of active ministry Father Bean also worked in the diocese’s Spanish Apostolate and, from 1974-83, in Brazil, Colombia and San Diego.

Born in Albany, N.Y., on May 10, 1934, he attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, N.J. and was ordained on May 19, 1962 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden by Archbishop Celestine J. Damiano. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at St. Ann Parish, Wildwood.

He was parochial vicar at St. Rose of Lima, Newfield (1962-63); Holy Name, Camden (1963-65); St. Joseph, South Camden (1965-67, 1987); St. Mary, Millville (1968-69, 1984-86); St. Joseph, East Camden (1969-74); St. Anthony of Padua, Camden (1983-84); Assumption, Atco (1986-87); St. Aloysius, Oaklyn (1987-88); St. Michael, Cedarville (1988-90); and Holy Spirit, Atlantic City (1993-94).

Father Bean served on the Priests Council, as a chaplain at West Jersey Hospital, Camden; Prison Ministry in Camden County; and St. Mary’s Nursing Home, Cherry Hill.

He is the son of the late Wilbur A. Bean, Sr. and Stephanie (nee Russell); brother of David A. Bean (Eleanor) of Granville, NY and the late Julianne B. Kuth, Wilbur A. Bean, Jr., and Sister Marcella Bean.

Father Bean is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday morning, July 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Home Chapel, Cherry Hill. The Rite of Committal and Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.

Memorial donations in Father Bean’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Nursing Home: Therapeutic Recreation Dept., 220 St. Mary’s Drive, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. Please write in memo: Father Charles Bean.
