He is producing one-size safety devices for hospitals and other healthcare institutions. The boxes, which are placed around COVID-19 patients, allow doctors and nurses to provide intubation and other treatment without the fear of exposure to the novel coronavirus, preserving their PPE (personal protective equipment) gear as well.
Pearlman’s friend, Dr. Justin Scott, first encountered the idea of these boxes while reading an article from a Taiwanese anesthesiologist. Dr. Scott reached out to Pearlman, who late last month created two prototypes himself out of his living room for use in emergency rooms.
To date, Pearlman has more than 50 orders for these devices, including from Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes in Camden. They are to be given away, free of charge, to hospitals and facilities in such places as Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Through donated funds and materials, he is close to being able to manufacture 100 boxes.
“I want everything to go back” to how it was, he says. “I have friends (who work in the medical field) and I want to protect them.”
Pearlman’s philosophy is, “If you’re able to do something, do it. These boxes are going to go wherever is needed. Whoever is asking, we’ll reach out and get it to them.”
