Editor:
I’m saddened when clergy and religious, whom many view as role models, resort to knee-jerk judgmentalism, but that’s what Sister Mary Ann Walsh did recently in her Tuscon shooting commentary (“Responding to an increasingly violent society,” Jan. 14). Though she admits outright that no one knows what caused someone to commit this tragedy, she joined the media chorus, preemptively blaming talk radio as a contributor. She admits her assumption is based upon the reputation of talk radio hosts alone, not substance (hosts “who are more famous for put-downs than intelligent commentary.”) I’ll bet she never heard talk radio; she’s obviously ignorant of Glenn Beck, for example. Glenn constantly appeals listeners to act with honor, respect and non-violence when dealing with opponents of freedom. Know whom you’re criticizing before you play the game you purport to abhor.
By the time the Jan. 14 issue of your paper circulated, it turned out that the perpetrator hated talk radio and never listened to it. To imply that talk radio contributes to the culture of violence is absurd. Doing this when six people are dead is disgraceful.

P.S. Maybe we can blame the sick individual who did this.
