The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of September.
Meggan Bischoff
Paul VI High School, Haddonfield
Volleyball

The Paul VI High School girls volleyball team picked up right where it left off after a banner season thanks to the steadying presence of Meggan Bischoff on the back line.
Bischoff, a senior, racked up 86 digs, 31 aces and seven assists in September to help the Eagles in their pursuit of back-to-back state championships. Paul VI was a perfect 12-0 heading into October, and Bischoff is closing in on her 400th career dig, with 381 through Oct. 1. She recorded 279 digs last year during the Eagles’ 28-3 season, which included a Non-Public A state title.
Isabella Elentrio
Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Newfield
Field Hockey

The Our Lady of Mercy Academy field hockey team escaped September without a loss for the first time in school history. Junior Isabella Elentrio led the way for the Villagers (7-0) with 10 goals and four assists as OLMA established a new program record with seven consecutive victories. Elentrio scored in six of the Villagers’ seven games and recorded hat tricks against Timber Creek and Bridgeton along the way. OLMA finished the month with four straight shutouts, which also set a new school record.

Sean Finan
Holy Spirit High School, Absecon
Football

Not much gets past Sean Finan on the football field. The Holy Spirit High School senior linebacker has become a roadblock for opposing offenses as he leads the Spartans with 32 tackles including 23 solo tackles. Finan and the Spartans’ defense allowed a total of 27 points over their last three weeks, which included wins over Washington Township, Saint Augustine and Clearview. Finan has contributed two sacks, 18 tackling assists and a fumble recovery for Holy Spirit, which is 5-1 entering October.
Trina Frey
Wildwood Catholic Academy, North Wildwood
Tennis

The Wildwood Catholic Academy girls tennis team is enjoying its best season in recent memory thanks to a terrific 1-2-3 singles combination led by first singles player Trina Frey.
Frey, a senior, has sparked the Crusaders to six straight victories to round out September, matching the longest winning streak for the program in more than a decade.
Frey hasn’t lost a set in those six Wildwood Catholic wins, and leads a lineup that includes Jamie Bogle and Joanna McShaffry, who have been just as impressive at second and third singles respectively. The Crusaders were 6-1 through the first month of the season.
Jimmy Kane
Wildwood Catholic Academy, North Wildwood
Soccer

The Wildwood Catholic Academy’s boys soccer team might be struggling to find the win column, but the Crusaders are witnessing some superb soccer from Jimmy Kane. The Crusaders senior has scored all 12 of his team’s goals through the month of September and is well on his way to matching last season’s 25-goal performance. Kane, who won a Non-Public B state championship in the javelin last spring, also plays basketball in the winter. Through September, Kane has scored 43 career goals and added 17 assists.
Allie Serlenga
Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken
Soccer

Allie Serlenga is already halfway to matching her sensational 20-goal sophomore season. With 10 goals in just six games, Serlenga’s junior season is off to a roaring start as the Crusaders — last year’s South Jersey Non-Public B finalists — navigate a tough Olympic Conference schedule with a 3-3-2 showing through the first month of the season. Serlenga has now passed the 50-point plateau for her career with 35 goals and 16 assists and continues to be one of the top scoring threats in South Jersey.
