GLOUCESTER CITY — Family and friends of the late Kathleen Guerrieri O’Beirne will gather Oct. 22 to raise funds for a scholarship program in memory of the 35-year-old former Deptford resident who died earlier this year of cancer.

Proceeds from the benefit — being held at O’Hara’s Pub in Gloucester City — will go toward the Kathleen Guerrieri O’Beirne Make A Difference Memorial Scholarship established at Gloucester Catholic High School. The scholarship will benefit a GCHS graduate who plans to enter the field of social work, which was Guerrieri O’Beirne’s profession. She was a 1993 graduate of the high school.

Guerrieri O’Beirne worked with homeless people, AIDS patients and the elderly.

“I think that so many people value Kathy’s sense of obligation to others because she was a very giving and selfless person,” said Tracy Matozzo, a classmate of Kathleen’s in elementary and high school.

“The best way to honor her memory and her intentional acts of kindness is to create a situation where we can help someone else. If we can assist a few future social workers, we can make a difference in the lives of others — just as Kathy did in her social circles and in her own profession.” Matozzo added. “The Kathleen Guerrieri O’Beirne Make A Difference Scholarship is about having an impact on the future of Gloucester Catholic graduates, but at the same time, acknowledging the positive difference that Kathy made in our lives as well as in the lives of others.”

A resident of Galloway, Guerrieri O’Beirne died April 29 of colorectal cancer. She was a member of the Church of Assumption in Galloway and was active at Assumption Regional Catholic School.

She grew up in Deptford and was a 1989 graduate of the former Most Holy Redeemer School in Westville Grove. She also held degrees from the The Catholic University of America and the University of Alabama.

The benefit will be held 7-11 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, at  O’Hara’s Pub,       22 N. King St., Gloucester City. Cost: $25. For tickets, donations and information  contact Tracy Matozzo at tracymatozzo@yahoo.com

Guerrieri O’Beirne is survived by her husband, Patrick; daughter, Emma; parents, Carol and Gabe Guerrieri; sister, Kristen; grandmothers, Elizabeth Gilligan and Evelyn Guerrieri; her in-laws, Pokey and Tommy O’Beirne, Meg and Andy Payment, and Kathleen and Ryan O’Beirne.
