Damian Arbuckle, an alumnus of Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School, Ocean View, and a junior at St. Augustine Preparatory School, Richland, visited Bishop McHugh Friday, April 15, to collect donations given by the students to help with Arbuckle’s school service project. He is pictured with third- graders at the school who donated school supplies to be sent to Tochatichi, N.M., to be used on a Navajo reservation.
Damian Arbuckle of Rio Grande and Andrew Moffa of Linwood, both juniors at St. Augustine Preparatory School, Richland, are gathering donations for their school service project in New Mexico this summer.
They have asked their parishes and grade schools to donate hats, gloves, blankets and school supplies. These items are being shipped to a Navajo reservation in Tochatichi, N.M., where the boys will work for a week in July. They will help plant crops, take care of livestock and build small shelters. They also plan to help the Navajos record the history of the tribe by renting equipment needed to do so by the National Archives.
Damian’s uncle is a Franciscan priest who works with the Navajo tribe in New Mexico. Through him the students will work with the Franciscan sisters and priests at St. Mary’s Mission there.
They are also helping a local South Jersey Teach for America volunteer who works at a reservation school in Crown Point, N.M., where no running water exists and school supplies and warm clothing are scarce.
Damian got an enthusiastic response from his parish, Our Lady of Angels in Cape May Court House, and alma mater, Bishop McHugh Regional in Ocean View. Hope and Help Outreach and the Knights of Columbus of Our Lady of Angels Church donated money to defray the cost of shipping for the two families.
