Father Dunphy, Father Hegarty to retire, Father Bradley named Emmaus pastor

Bishop Joseph A. Galante this week announced the retirement of two priests and the appointment of a new pastor:

— Father Robert Dunphy, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Mt. Ephraim, retired June 9.

— Father Michael P. Hegarty, senior priest at Holy Maternity, Audubon, retired June 9, and will be in residence at Sacred Heart North, Cherry Hill.

— Father Hugh J. Bradley, pastor of Blessed John the Twenty-Third Parish, Blue Anchor, was appointed pastor of Emmaus Catholic Communnity, Mt. Ephraim, for a six-year term, effective June 9. Emmaus Catholic Community is the parish formed June 9 from the uniting of Sacred Heart and Holy Maternity.

Father Dunphy, 72, was pastor of Sacred Heart for 16 years, 1994-2010, and previously served as pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Newfield, 1989-94.

He also served as administrator and then pastor of Holy Maternity during the uniting of Sacred Heart and Holy Maternity.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., he attended Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., where he earned a master’s degree in counseling, and St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe. He was ordained May 22, 1965, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden.

Father Dunphy served as parochial vicar at St. John Parish, Collingswood, 1965-66; St. Mary, Gloucester, 1966-68; Assumption, Pomona, 1968; Queen of Heaven, Cherry Hill, 1968-73; St. Agnes, Blackwood, 1973-80; St. Margaret, Woodbury Heights, 1980-85; and St. Charles Borromeo, Washington Township, 1985-89.

He was a member of the Priest Personnel Board and the Common Policy Committee for Marriage Preparation, and was a Pre-Cana moderator.

Father Hegarty, 66, holds a master’s degree in social work from Temple University, Philadelphia, and a master’s in counseling from Villanova.

He was ordained May 20, 1995, at St. Peter Parish, Merchantville.

Father Hegarty was administrator of St. Ann Parish, Elmer, 2006-08, and parochial vicar of St. John, Collingswood, 1995-97; Our Lady of Grace, Somerdale, 1997-2000; St. Rose of Lima, Haddon Heights, 2000-05; and St. Raymond, Villas, 2005-06. He was senior priest at Holy Maternity, 2008-10.

He was a member of the RCIA Commission.

Father Bradley, 52, was pastor of Blessed John the Twenty-Third, 2005-10.

Born in Providence, R.I., he attended Stockton State College, Pomona, and Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora, N.Y. He was ordained May 27, 1989, in St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral, Camden.

He served as parochial vicar of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Haddon Heights, 1989-94; St. John, Collingswood, 1994-95; St. Francis of Assisi, Vineland, 1995-2000; St. Joseph, Somers Point, 2000-04; and Assumption, Pomona, 2004-05.
