Father Edward Francis Sobolewski, former pastor in Rosenhayn and National Park, died Oct. 25. He was 79.

Before his retirement in 2010, Father Sobolewski was pastor of Saint Mary Parish, Rosenhayn, where he had served since 2005.

Previous to that assignment, he was pastor of Saint Matthew, National Park for 11 years (1994-2005).

Born in Shenandoah, Pa., Father Sobolewski underwent seminary studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, N.J., and was ordained May 31, 1969, in Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral, Camden, by Bishop George H. Guifoyle.

He served as parochial vicar at Saint Teresa Parish, Runnemede, 1969; Saint Francis of Assisi, Vineland, 1969-73; Immaculate Conception, Bridgeton, 1973-80; Our Lady Star of the Sea, Atlantic City, 1980; Saint John, Collingswood, 1980-81; Saint John Neumann, Sicklerville, 1981-84; Saints Peter and Paul, Turnersville, 1984-87; Christ the King, Haddonfield, 1987-88; and Saint Peter, Pleasantville, 1988-94.

Father Sobolewski served as chaplain to Vineland’s Police Department in Vineland, ministered in marriage preparation, and was a member of the Priests Council.

“He was a good guy, good with his parishioners; I was glad he was my first pastor,” remembers Father Walter Norris, pastor of Saint Joseph the Worker in Haddon Township.

After coming to the diocese from the Pallottine Order, Father Norris’ first assignment was at Saint Matthew, where Father Sobolewski was pastor.

Father Norris remembers the pastor’s great cooking every night, and the their nightly viewings of “Murder, She Wrote.”

At the request of the family, all funeral services — including the funeral Mass — are private.
