Frank G. Donio, 72, the father of Father Frank S. Donio, S.A.C., vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees for Bishop Eustace High School, Pennsauken, died Saturday, Jan. 1 at Virtua Hospital in Berlin.
Born in Hammonton, Mr. Donio spent his childhood in Rosedale. He lived in Hammonton since 1969. He was the president of Frank Donio, Inc., Donio Trucking Company and Donio Leasing Company.
Mr. Donio retired from the produce industry in 1999, after a 45-year career in the family business. Following his retirement, he went into the motel business, owning and operating the Knolls Resort Motel in Wildwood, before selling it in 2006. He continued managing other real estate holdings throughout Southern New Jersey.
Mr. Donio was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, class of 1956. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a dedicated community volunteer, often working behind the scenes. He was the past president of the Hammonton Exchange Club, member of the Sons of Italy, member of the Knights of Columbus Pallotti Council, former member of the Hammonton Zoning Board of Adjustment, former member of the board of Kessler Memorial Hospital, and coached basketball for the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the Squires youth basketball team. He was an avid fan of the Eagles and Phillies.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Millie Donio, and his brother, Samuel Donio.
In addition to Father Donio, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Angela (nee Bilazzo); his sons John Donio, Gabriel Donio (Gina), and James Donio (Kelly); his sister Annabel Donio Arena (Joseph); sister-in-law Diane Donio; and grandchildren Frank, Matthew, and Juliet.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 6 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Parish, St. Joseph Church, Hammonton. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anchor of Hope Foundation Inc., 101 Tilton St., Hammonton, NJ 08037.
