El domingo pasado, la Parroquia de Santa Mónica en Atlantic City festejó la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia.
Fue celebrada el 20 de enero, el día antes del día festivo de la patrona y protectora de la República Dominicana, la liturgia de la tarde fue celebrada por el sacerdote retirado, el Padre Patrick Brady, y concelebrada por el Padre Jon Thomas, párroco de la Parroquia de Santa Mónica.
Una de las festividades públicas en la República Dominicana, la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, o Nuestra Señora de la Gracia, se remonta a 1502, cuando una imagen de la Virgen María fue llevada a la isla de La Española por dos hermanos de España, los primeros europeos que se establecieron en Santo Domingo. Hoy en día, la imagen se encuentra en la Basílica Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, en la ciudad de Higuey.
Después de la liturgia, las festividades continuaron con el entrete-nimiento tradicional, baile y comida.

Last Sunday, Atlantic City’s Parish of Saint Monica marked the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia. Held Jan. 20, the day before the actual feast of the patroness of the Dominican Republic, the afternoon liturgy at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church was celebrated by retired priest Father Patrick Brady, and concelebrated by Father Jon Thomas, pastor of the Parish of Saint Monica.
One of the public holidays in the Dominican Republic, the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, or Our Lady of Grace, dates back to 1502, when a portrait of the Virgin Mary was brought to the island of Hispaniola by two brothers from Spain, the first Europeans to settle in Santo Domingo. Today, the image is located in the Basilica Catedral Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia, in the city of Higuey.
After the liturgy, there was entertainment, dancing, and food.
