Bishop Joseph Galante and Sister Roseann Quinn, SSJ, Delegate for Lifelong Formation, have announced the following appointments:

appointees1-webJoseph J. Zagarella of Blackwood has been appointed director for Youth Ministries, effective Aug. 10. A graduate of Paul VI High School, he has served as director of religious education at St. Agnes, Blackwood and taught religion at Salesian High School in New Rochelle, N.Y. He also was assistant coordinator for youth and young adult ministry for the Diocese of Camden and coordinator of religious education at Our Lady of Lourdes, Glassboro.

Zagarella has an M.A. in religious education from Felician College and a B.A. from Franciscan University (Steubenville, Ohio). He is beginning doctoral studies in educational leadership at Seton Hall University.

appointees3-webAndres F. Arango has been appointed director for Young Adult Ministries, effective July 20.  Arango served as coordinator of the Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Renewal for the Diocese of Sacramento from 2003-2008 and served as regional representative to the Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Renewal Pacific Region.  He was a parish coordinator for Youth and Leadership Development at Immaculate Conception Parish in Sacramento and director of Leadership Training for the School of Evangelization (La Ceja, Columbia).    In addition to his ministerial experience, he was a human resources assistant, office manager and claim analyst for Premier Access/Access Dental in Sacramento and also was resident services coordinator for Mercy Housing in Gait, Calif.

Arango has a Master of Theological Studies from the Franciscan School of Theology (Berkeley, Calif.), a B.S. in Production Engineering (EAFIT University, Medellin, Colombia), an Associate of Arts in philosophy (Misionero del Espiritu Santo Seminary, La Ceja, Colombia) and a certificate in leadership formation from the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services Institute, Rome.

appointees2-webSister Kathleen Burton, SSJ, has been named consultant to the Office of Religious Education/Faith Formation and will join the office Oct. 1 as director.

Sister Burton has served as director of Faith Formation in three parishes in the Newark Archdiocese. She also served as director of Adult Faith Formation, facilitator for Catechist Formation, and catechist for Christian Foundations for Ministry, all for the Archdiocese of Newark. She served as vice president of the National Parish Catechetical Directors and was the 2007 recipient of the National Parish Catechetical Directors Religious Education Excellence Award.

She has a B.A. in history from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and a Masters in religious studies from LaSalle University in Philadelphia. She holds a certificate in family counseling from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The newly named directors will collaborate with the diocese’s Lifelong Formation staff to support parish efforts to advance the pastoral priorities identified at the Speak Up sessions that were held with Bishop Galante in 2005 and 2006. The priorities include Lifelong Faith Formation, Youth and Young Adults, Liturgy, Lay Ministry, Vocations, and Compassionate Outreach.

Lifelong Formation includes the diocesan offices of Youth Ministries, Young Adult Ministries, Campus Ministry, Family Life and Respect Life, Social Justice, Evangelization, Religious Education, Lay Ministry Formation, Catholic Schools, Adult Faith Formation, Black Catholic Ministry, Hispanic Ministry, Ministry with the Deaf/Persons with Disabilities, Worship, St. Pius X Spiritual Life Center, and Ministry with Seniors.

Sister Roseann Quinn, Bishop’s delegate for Lifelong Formation, said the recent appointments will enhance diocesan efforts that are focused on addressing formation needs for Catholics of all ages in South Jersey.

“Our parishes are augmenting their volunteer staffs with paid, qualified lay ministers who will collaborate with clergy, parish staffs and volunteers to advance the pastoral priorities parishioners have indicated are most important,” she said. “As parishes adapt in order to meet these challenges, our diocesan offices can do no less. That is why we are taking steps to streamline diocesan departmental structures, to strengthen our own staffing and to combine our energies more seamlessly to ensure a focused, collaborative, and fully engaged effort to support parishes in their lifelong formation work,” she said.
