William J. Klatt, a passionate advocate for the pro-life cause, died March 25 at his home in Sewell. He was 78.
A man known for his quiet and gentle demeanor, Mr. Klatt nonetheless worked tirelessly not only to fight legal abortion but also to help women and children in need. He served for four years as the pro-life coordinator for the Diocese of Camden, and he was a volunteer and trustee for Good Counsel Homes in Riverside, an organization that serves homeless, expectant and new mothers and their children .
One of those who worked closely with Klatt, and saw his passion and love for human life, was Brenda Quinn, one of the co-founders of Good Counsel Homes in Riverside. The two, friends since 2003, would travel to Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Camden, educating students on chastity and pro-life issues. “It’s a huge loss,” Quinn said of Mr. Klatt’s death. “Bill was a friend and a pro-life hero. He had an unwavering zeal to protect mothers and their babies.”
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Klatt lived in Pitman for 33 years and in Sewell for 14 years. He retired after 25 years from MAMCO as vice president, and worked another 10 years for Marvin Windows. He was a member of Mary, Mother of Mercy Parish, Glassboro, and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joanne E. (nee Conway), children Beverly (fiance Eric DeBlaker), Jacalyn (Angelo) Rizzi, and Theresa (Keith Brooks) Klatt, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The funeral Mass was celebrated March 28 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Pitman. Interment was private. Contributions to Good Counsel Homes, PO Box 6068, Hoboken, NJ 07030 or www.goodcounselhomes.org
