Saint Barbara festival

Father Ariel Hernandez of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish celebrates Mass during the Saint Barbara Festival at the Oak Road Chapel in Vineland on July 27. The Saint Barbara Chapel was founded by the Scarpa brothers, Gaetano and Antonio, who were altar servers in Salento, Italy. They came to America in 1888 and sent for an olive wood statue of Saint Barbara and built the chapel in 1920. After World War II, the people of Salento credited the intercession of Saint Barbara for sparing their town from a bombing raid and have an annual festival in her honor in July. The Vineland Saint Barbara Chapel family and members have recently begun to commemorate this event of thanksgiving. The chapel is open daily to visitors.
