Embarking on its sixth year, the Samuel Group will soon provide a new cohort of young women and men the opportunity to discern and consider what calling they hear from God – perhaps a calling to the religious life, Holy Orders, or a vocation as a single or married lay person.
Geared for those aged 18-39, the program helps young adults to “know themselves, Jesus and their role in the Church and world,” says Sister Ann Kateri, a Franciscan Sister of the Renewal, who with her religious community in Atlantic City, organizes this initiative.
One Sunday a month, from October to April, participants will enjoy Adoration, catechetical talks, study, prayer and fellowship, all to spur self-examination and growth for the purpose of discovering what they hear in God’s call and what may be limiting their ability to embrace it.
One element that is being enhanced this year, Sister Ann Kateri said, is a renewed emphasis on one’s prayer life. Through “accompanying young adults in the experience of prayer, asking why it is essential and discussing how their own prayer life is going,” the Samuel Group team leaders will help guide participants in forming “a living relationship with the Lord.”
Registration is open until Oct. 1. Those interested will participate in a phone interview with a member of the leadership team. Upon acceptance, members agree to fully engage at all meetings, meet monthly with a spiritual director (the program can help individuals find one), and commit to daily prayer.
The meetings, which begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude with an optional 5:30 p.m. Mass, are held at Our Lady of the Lakes Church, 19 Malaga Road, Collings Lakes, on Oct. 9; Nov. 13; Dec. 11; Jan. 8; Feb. 12; March 12, and April 23.
