Three eighth grade students from three Catholic schools in the Diocese of Camden were awarded the Camden County Outstanding Achievement in Science Award. Gabrielle Christiansen, from Our Lady of Hope Regional School in Blackwood, Erica DeCecco, from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Berlin, and Amber Ford, from John Paul II Regional in Stratford were three of the 28 students in Camden County recently invited to an awards ceremony at Camden County Technical Schools in Pennsauken. This award was sponsored by the Medical Arts Academy of Camden County, whose members consist of the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Camden County College, Camden County Technical Schools, Virtua Hospital and Richard Stockton College.

Michael Franz, a senior at Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill, is the $3,000 scholarship winner of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. The festival was held at DeSales University on March 6. Michael performed Julius Caesar’s Act III, Scene II monologue. He was one of more than 100 candidates, advancing to the final showcase where he competed against the top 12 participants. There were four DeSales University scholarships awarded, the highest being $4,000 a year. Michael was awarded third place.

Guardian Angels Regional School sent five of their seventh grade students to Washington, D.C. on Friday, March 25 to attend the Jr. National Youth Leadership Conference. The event ends April 1.

Students from Notre Dame Regional School in grades six, seven and eight recently participated in the Cumberland County Science Fair against more than 200 students from six surrounding schools. Three Notre Dame eighth graders took the top three awards in Environmental Sciences: Christian Santiago, Casey Panella and David Carey. Jacqueline Napier, a sixth grader, won second place in the Engineering category and Abigail Mac Neill finished second in the Biochemistry field. In the category of Physics, seventh grader William Cirucci placed second, and the team of Samantha Nicholson and Sandra Melesio, both in sixth grade, finished third. Honorable Mention went to Monica DeDomenico in eighth grade, Joshua Mazzeo in sixth grade and Ryan Meehan in sixth grade.

St. Rose of Lima School, Haddon Heights, seventh and eighth grade accelerated math students competed in the Fifth Annual Holy Cross Mathematics Competition on March 1. There were 22 schools competing with a total of 156 student competitors. Mike Considine and Nick Viggiano finished in the top 16 and went on to compete in the Lightning Round. After the group test, the eighth grade team comprised of Considine, Alex Deeck, Matt Janis and Viggiano placed first and went on to the Jeopardy Round where they finished first and won the prize of Holy Cross Mathematics Competition Champions. Also, competing were seventh graders Allison Growney, Eric Ostock, Nick Rojek and Joe Schade.
