Sister Margaret Appell, OSF (formerly Sister Saint Margaret), 87, died in Assisi House on Jan. 4. During her 11 years in the Diocese of Camden, she served as both teacher and principal at Saint Nicholas School in Egg Harbor.
She had been a professed member of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia for 67 years. She entered the congregation in 1949 and professed her first vows in 1952.
She ministered primarily in elementary education. Sister Margaret ministered for 34 years in the Diocese of Trenton. From 1983-89 she served on the provincial council for the Sisters of Saint Francis’ Saint Anthony Province — at that time based in Trenton — and served as provincial coordinator of education. She also served in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 2013 she moved to Assisi House, the congregation’s retirement residence in Aston, where she served in prayer and hospitality ministry until her death.
Services were held in Assisi House, Aston, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 9. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston. Sister Margaret is survived by a nephew, nieces, and by her Franciscan family.
