Sister Marie Cecilia Schiffer, former teacher, dies


Sister Marie Cecilia Schiffer, OSF, 87, who taught at parishes in the Diocese of Camden, died Oct. 6 at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, N.Y.

Born Eleanor Dolores Schiffer in Philadelphia to Herman and Margaret Serverson Schiffer, she was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, N.Y. at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug. 15, 1948, and professed her final religious vows on Aug. 16, 1955.

She served in schools in Texas, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. In the Diocese of Camden, she taught at St. Peter School, Merchantville; St. Cecilia School, Pennsauken; and St. Agnes School, Blackwood.

Sister Marie Cecilia retired from teaching in 1987. She performed part-time ministry while semi-retired at St. Mary of the Angels, Haddonfield.

On Sept. 8, 2010, she joined the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse community in Allegany.

Sister Marie Cecilia is predeceased by her parents and brothers, Herman, George, Edward, James, and Francis. She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Schiffer and Regina Schiffer of Pinellas Park, Fla., as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Oct. 8, in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial followed in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
