
Sister Mary Elizabeth Coyle, IHM, 75, a former teacher and director of religious education/children’s catechesis in the Diocese of Camden, died May 25 at Camilla Hall, Malvern, Pa.
Born Sept. 11, 1946, in Annapolis, Md., Sister Mary Beth entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary religious community in 1964. A year later, she received her habit and religious name, Sister M. James Andrew. She professed her first vows June 28, 1967. In the late 1980s, she accepted the option to return to her baptismal name.
Sister Mary Beth earned a bachelor of arts in theology/history from Immaculata College (now University) and a master of arts in religious studies from the Notre Dame Pontifical Catechetical Institute.
From 1967 to 1987, Sister Mary Beth taught elementary school children throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In the Diocese of Camden, this ministry included Holy Rosary in Ashland (1971-1974) and Saint Raymond, Villas (1985-1987).
She went on to serve as director of religious education at various parishes, including Saint Teresa Parish, Runnemede (1987-1990), and Resurrection, Marmora (1995-2000).
From 2000 to August 2008, Sister Mary Beth was the director of children’s catechesis in the Diocese of Camden. After further ministry outside the Diocese, she began to serve the Camilla Hall Community as a member of the Apostolate of Prayer in 2020.
In addition to her IHM community, Sister Mary Beth is survived by her sisters Nancy Jerome (Garry); Jane Coyle Morris; Margaret M. Fisher (Bruce); her brothers, Michael T. Coyle (Renee); Joseph P. Coyle (Patrice); James A. Coyle (Melissa); and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated June 1.
