St. Monica ‘s choir, consisting of Haitian-Americans, were the guest choir at Assumption church in Galloway.
Led by Father Yvans Jazon, who is pastor at St. Monica’s and formerly served at Assumption Church, the group sang a mixture of English and Creole songs for the evening vigil Mass in remembrance of the one year anniversary of those who died in Haiti and other disasters and, also, for all those still suffering without clean water, food, homes, jobs, schools, hospitals and churches. Hearing the beautiful songs sung in Creole reminded the mission team of that “hope in the Lord” that they heard in the voices of the singers in Haiti last year.
Father Mike Matveenko, pastor of Assumption Church, welcomed the mission team back to its Alma Mater, Assumption Church, where last year so many people devoted themselves to support relief efforts in Haiti.
Father Yvans said, “It is a blessing to have such people who devote their lives to reach out to those in need and to allow great things to happen at and through their parish and with the wonderful support of their pastor Father Mike Matveenko.”
The Mass kicked off the Mission team for 2011. A Haitian dinner was served afterwards while the Mission team remembered the people they served in Haiti by sharing the faces through the photos and slide show by Leenie Light and, also sharing of experiences by 2010 Mission team members, Father Chuck Collozzi, Mike Knudson, Alex Hughes, Trish Best, Victoria Light, Brigid Hughes, John Kelley and Father Yvans Jazon.
