Saint Augustine Preparatory School graduate Josh Hood was selected by the Seattle Mariners, and Gloucester Catholic High School alum Andrew Vail was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft.
Hood, who recently finished his redshirt junior season at North Carolina State University, was selected in the sixth round. Splitting time between third base and shortstop at NC State, Hood batted .268 with 62 hits and 52 RBIs. He hit 13 home runs. Prior to joining the Wolfpack, Hood played two seasons at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors. He was drafted in the 20th round last season by the Boston Red Sox but opted to play at NC State instead. In high school, Hood led Richland’s Saint Augustine to three straight South Jersey titles and won a Non-Public A championship in 2018 in his senior year.
Vail also won a state championship during his senior year in 2018, as Gloucester Catholic, Gloucester City, won the Non-Public B title. The left-handed pitcher spent one year at the University of Maryland before transferring to the University of Missouri, where he threw 18 and 2/3 innings before needing Tommy John surgery to repair his pitching arm. He finished his college education at Rowan University. Vail was taken in the 20th round by the Padres.
