Sister Elizabeth O’Leary, OSF, 83, South Jersey native, Catholic school student, and director of Medical Records at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, died Dec. 9 at the Saint Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, NY.
Born Mary Anne O’Leary on Feb. 21, 1933 in Camden, she attended grade school at Holy Saviour, Westmont and graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 1951. In 1960, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, and completed college courses at Saint Elizabeth Teachers College (now Saint Bonaventure University) in Allegany, and Mount Mercy College in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Sister Elizabeth was director of Medical Records at Camden’s Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital from 1965-73. After ministering in this field elsewhere in New Jersey and New York, in 2000 she accepted the position as regional secretary for her congregation in the Northeast.
When she became semi-retired in 2004, she returned to Our Lady of Lourdes, where she served in Patient Relations and as Spiritual Care Advisor. In 2010, she entered Saint Elizabeth Motherhouse.
Sister Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and brothers, John Francis O’Leary Jr. and James Joseph O’Leary. She is survived by her brother, Joseph G. O’Leary and sisters Elizabeth M. Carroll and Ellen L. Nuckowski, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 17, 2016, in the Chapel of Saint Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial followed in Saint Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
