Parishes in the Diocese of Camden have raised more than a half a million dollars to support the emergency relief efforts underway in Haiti, which was devastated by a January earthquake.
Bishop Joseph Galante asked that the collection be taken up in all parishes of the diocese on January 16 and 17, the weekend after the earthquake.
“Given the enormity of this tragedy, the scope of destruction and the need to speed emergency relief to those areas hardest hit by this disaster, I am asking all the parishes of the Diocese of Camden to take up a special Haiti Relief Collection,” he said at the time.
The collection monies will help support the efforts of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) which is the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
CRS was founded in 1943 to assist war-affected populations in Europe. Through the years, CRS has spent an average of 30 percent of its overall budget on emergency programs and has been present during some of the largest emergencies of the last decade including Hurricane Mitch, the Kosovo refugee crisis and in Afghanistan.
CRS has earned a top-rated rating (A-Excellent) from the American Institute of Philanthropy, an independent watchdog group that evaluates the efficiency, accountability and governance of nonprofit organizations and provides recognition to highly effective and ethical charities.
