On Saturday, March 21, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and “social distancing guidelines,” the work to feed the hungry continued at Pennsauken’s Mary, Queen of All Saints Parish.
From 10-11:30 a.m., individuals who came to the parish — traveling by foot, bicycle or car — received bags of canned goods, juice, rice, meat and produce, courtesy of the parish’s Loaves and Fishes Ministry.
Every Saturday, parish volunteers provide food to approximately 45 families from the first floor of the old Saint Cecilia school building.
“People are out of work; they have needs,” said Mary McGinley, coordinator of the Loaves and Fishes Ministry.
In the past week, there have been increased calls to the parish from those asking for assistance, she said.
The work and mission in Pennsauken doesn’t stop.
“I have to go to the grocery stores today and pick up some orange juice,” McGinley said. “I met a young woman who was having difficulty, after she lost her job as a waitress at a pizza shop. I told her to come early on Saturday” to make sure she got what she needed.
