PREPARING THE PEWS FOR A CAUTIOUS REOPENING — Parish communities across South Jersey are preparing to open their doors in the next few weeks, after nearly three months of mandated lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Above, Tom Wilkie, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6375 out of Saint Peter in Merchantville, helps to clear out the hymnals and prayer cards in advance of the church’s re-opening in the near future. Bishop Dennis Sullivan has determined that in the Diocese of Camden daily Masses are expected to begin again on June 9 with Sunday-obligation Masses beginning on June 13. While this is a decision that will be received with great joy, it also comes with several caveats, please note the companion graphic. There will be many changes to the Mass and each church will need to utilize the new diocesan protocols in a way that works best for the logistics of their churches and the available staff/volunteers to implement the new policies. Please speak with your pastor about how these policies have been implemented.

The capacity in the churches, will be significantly reduced for Masses, possibly as low as 25%, with six-foot distancing rules in effect. This means space in our churches will be on a first-come, first-served basis. However, livestream Masses will continue and Bishop Sullivan has allowed for the distribution of Holy Communion inside churches at specified times (social distancing requirements considered and posted) to those who watched the Mass livestreamed in their homes.

When you attend Mass you will also notice that there are no hymnals, missalettes and other materials generally left in the pews. Ushers will guide you to your seats, so you likely will not be able to sit in your usual location.

Drive-In, drive-up and/or drive-thru Masses, confessions, adoration or distribution of Holy Communion remain prohibited in all parishes in the Diocese of Camden. Parishes are not permitted to schedule additional Masses beyond the regular Sunday Mass schedule.  Though, one or more Masses may continue to be broadcast via live-stream.

This is a new, and God-willing temporary, method to how we celebrate the Mass. Bishop Sullivan asks that you be patient with our pastors and our fellow parishioners as we implement and adapt to these changes. Remember, the ultimate goal is to welcome people back to the Mass as carefully and safely as possible.
