Father Gerard Marable, who was the homilist at the Juneteenth Mass June 19 at the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light, Cherry Hill, distributes Communion. Sponsored by the Black Catholic Ministry Apostolate of the Camden Diocese, the Mass was celebrated June 19 at the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light, Cherry Hill. Juneteenth commemorates the date when, in 1865, enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. Two years earlier, the Emancipation Proclamation had declared the freeing of slaves throughout the nation. On June 17, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law declaring June 19 as a national holiday.
