The Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Newark have announced that the observance of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus has been permanently moved to the Seventh Sunday of Easter.
Previously, the Solemnity was observed the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter. The Ascension of the Lord Jesus marks when Jesus ascended bodily into heaven.
“The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus will be celebrated in all the Latin-rite dioceses of New Jersey on Sunday, replacing the liturgical celebration and readings of the Seventh Sunday of Easter – this year May 29, 2022,” Bishop Dennis Sullivan announced in a letter to priests March 21. “This includes the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. Thursday, May 26, 2022, will be the Thursday of the Sixth week of Easter; the memorial of Saint Philip Neri.”
New Jersey was one of only a handful of states continuing to observe Ascension Thursday; over the past years, the majority of ecclesiastical provinces had moved the Solemnity to Sunday.
