Donna Ottaviano-Britt, head of the Secretariat for Pastoral Outreach for the Diocese of Camden, and her husband, Joe, spent June 14-15 in Fortescue, Cumberland County, helping preserve the safety of horseshoe crabs. Walking along the Delaware Bay, the couple rescued overturned and stranded horseshoe crabs, which are currently spawning. The Delaware Bay is home to the largest population of horseshoe crabs in the world, but due to over-harvesting and degraded habitat conditions, their numbers have drastically declined. In addition to being a critical food source for the endangered red knot bird, horseshoe crabs are key to medicines: their blood is used to test vaccines, including the ones for COVID-19.
